MERRY CHRISTMAS !!!
X'mas Party for Orphans !
Guardian Angels mascot "Rocky Junior" played an active role there !
The Guardian Angels Japan supported a Christmas Party for orphans at the Hilton Tokyo Hotel on December 5th, 2007.
The host of the party was Mr. Bill Hersey, a journalist who has been a great supporter of the Guardian Angels in Japan for a long time and he organizes this party every Christmas season to invite kids who cannot live with their parents to the Hilton Tokyo Hotel.
This year about 100 kids came and they all received many gifts from presenters who were wives of ambassadors from all over the world who represented their countries including U.S.A.
One of the main guest of the party was Rocky Junior ! Kids were very happy with him and he was hugged a lot !
The Guardian Angels Japan have supported this party for 8 years. Wish the best for kids.
Happy Christmas !!!
On October 1st, the National Police Agency of Japan started the first "Crime
Stoppers" program in Japan. It is called the "Anonymous Report Dial" which
people can call in about the crime information anonymously by phone call.
Tel : 0120-924-839 (Mon thru Fri 9:30 am - 6:15 pm)
* Japanese Language only *
http://www.tokumei.or.jp/
If the information is effective for the solution to a crime, people can
receive the information fee up to 100,000 yen per a case. This program is
managed by the Guardian Angels Japan and the model program will be conducted for year and a half. It will be determined if it will be effective or not by the National Police Agency then.
|
|
The Guardian Angels Japan has already
prepared telephone call center for a confidential phone call and is ready to
contact the National Police Agency on the regular basis when we receive the
information. The information includes the juvenile delinquency, teen
prostitution and drugs. This program is very big challenge for the National
Police Agency because it will be the first trial to depend on the private
support for the crime solution.
We the Guardian Angels Japan should be very proud of this assignment and
hope it will be a big success !
Curtis Sliwa, the Founder of the Guardian Angels visits Japan !

Ms. Jovelyn from G.A. Philippines chapter is staying in Japan for 3 months and she came to show the awards of appreciations from the Tupi community to Curtis and KG Oda.
He discussed about the organized crime syndicates and the grass-roots movement with Ms. Hitomi Horie, President of Association of Victims of Organized Crime and Mr. Nakabayashi and Mr. Sugawara of The Japan Crime
Prevention Association.
He left for the graduation of New Zealand chapter with G.A. Japan Vice President Eight on Aug 28th.
We had the 8th ordinary general meeting on May 26th, 2007.
So many precious lives were lost in the Virginia Tech Massacre.
Here in Japan where guns are restricted, recent shooting incidents shocked
the nation. The two fiscal years ago, we had 76 shooting cases and 489 illegal guns were seized.Guns are shabby weapons that can destroy and kill people's lives in a split second.
Guns cannot be the tools to protect ourselves.
NO! GUNS
|
|
Curtis Sliwa, the Founder and President of Guardian Angels is among many who share pain from such gun crimes.Physical and mental sufferings continue to haunt the families and friends of victims. We have conducted a series of campaigns against gun crimes, but this tragedy made us even more determined for the effort.
We extend our deepest condolence to all the victims.

1. SAFETY & CLEAN UP PATROLS WITH CITIZENS, MEETINGS AND TRAINING
We often work together with the local community and patrol with local citizens.
('05 total : 118 times)
In 2005, the number of citizen volunteer safety groups reached 20,000, and the number of active members in Japan increased to 1.2million.
Since we have 24 chapters in Japan, each chapter carries out patrols which match the local characteristics. Also we are continually improving our skills through regular training and meetings.

Guardian Angels Week in Shibuya
GA Week in Shibuya is the biggest summer event, and has been held every year for the last ten years. (24hrs. 7days)
We set up a guide booth in front of Shibuya Sta. (we usually perform more than 130 guides per day during GA Week)
2. SPEAKING ENGAGEMENTS
The Speaking Engagements are mainly held for citizens groups and parents.
We teach them how to patrol, how to communicate with young people, and what they can do for the area as citizens.
Unfortunately however, the number of citizen patrol groups will probably decrease in the near future because of the aging society. The most important thing for them is knowing how to keep the motivation high and to keep continuing the patrol.
We also have seminars for Junior High and High School students about what you can do to avoid drugs and bullying.

[Safety Seminars for kids]
|
Lately, the numbers of kids who encounter frightening situations, such as attempted kidnapping or being spoken to by a stranger, are increasing.
Our Safety Seminar is designed for participation by Kids. In this program, we teach kids how to avoid such scary situations.
e.g. Keep your distance from strangers, pay attention to your surroundings etc...
|
|
It is important for kids to think that "Your friends are as important as yourself" so that they will be help each other when they are in trouble.
Through this program, kids can learn how important it is to cooperate with each other and rescue friends.

The Guardian Angels began twenty four years ago, on February 13, 1979. In the years prior to the Guardian Angels launch, Curtis Sliwa had become famous for his neighborhood clean-up and beautification projects in the South Bronx.
Using his co-workers at the Fordham Road McDonalds, where he was the night manager, Curtis formed the "Rock Brigade." The Rock Brigade received accolades and a full wall of awards from community and governmental groups around the city. By planting and cleaning up vacant lots and boarding up bombed-out buildings, they managed to make this notorious inner-city neighborhood more beautiful. It was a dark time in New York, with massive budget deficits, law enforcement layoffs and increasing crime. There was no funding for much needed law enforcement either from within or from without New York. Neighborhood watch groups were desperately needed, but they were not universally welcomed.
Mr. Sliwa recruited a multi-racial team of volunteers, largely gleaned from his employees at the McDonalds. It started out with Curtis and twelve volunteers. They were known initially as the "Magnificent Thirteen." They agreed to ride the subways between the toughest stops, without weapons, to find the gang members who had been mugging the straphangers in the subway and detain them for the police to arrest.
Notwithstanding some initial resistance, the thirteen soon grew to thousands, and was renamed the Guardian Angels, to counter the then-popular Hell's Angels group: Angels for good as a contrast to the Hell's Angels, who had glamorized violence and terror. With men and women from around the world forming the Guardian Angels chapters world-wide, they made a difference in the lives of people in the communities they patrolled, every single day. As the streets have become safer, the Guardian Angels have devoted more time to safety education and inner-city children programs. Local chapters use their hard-earned experience to teach self-defense courses and "street smart" skills to seniors, women and community groups, schools and university students around the country. The Cyberangels was then initiated and online safety and Internet skills are taught to schools, parents and children.
Guardian Angels Japan aims at preventing crime in the Japanese community through safety patrols, seminars and several other crime-prevention activities. Guardian Angels Japan is committed to helping the community take responsibility in protecting its own people. Our goal is to prevent crime through the safety patrols to make the community safer and to be a role model for the youth.

The President and Regional Director of Asia, Mr. Keiji Oda, was a Guardian Angel in New York City at the time of the earthquake in Kobe, 1995. At that time, he decided to return to his home country of Japan to help assist the people who suffered from this earthquake. He then established the Tokyo Chapter on February 11, 1996. Guardian Angels Japan was recognized as a Non-Profit Organization in April 20th, 1999 and today, we consist of seven directors, two supervisors, nine advisors, two senior advisors and 250 members. |
